You can tell that Mr. Santoro has spent a great deal of time as a storyteller in animation from the way his tale so effortlessly unfolds, as if you are watching a movie come to life before your eyes. The book is so incredibly well illustrated and designed, invoking the warmth and joy of the holiday season as you turn with delight from page to page. There were moments that may remind the reader of beloved holiday classics like The Polar Express or the animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and yet the story is never derivative, with unexpected twists and turns around every corner. The story itself is delightfully imaginative, following a plastic choirboy lawn decoration (a loving nod to the author's childhood) who is mistakingly thrown away and must find his way back to his owner, a little girl with no other decorations adorning her house. Along the way, the choirboy assembles a rich and unexpected cast of friends who help him on his journey. Fun surprises abound as the story unfolds and the choirboy bravely carries onward towards his goal. The ending is a true sight to behold. Each illustration carries with it such a deep breath of life, you can easily imagine this book being turned into it's own memorable holiday special. I'm glad to be a fan from the beginning and consider this book to be a definite "must add" to any family's holiday book collection. You'll never look at your lawn decorations the same again!
